Backyard Chickens

The City of St. Francis has adopted new Ordnances in regards to the ability to have chickens on properties less than five (5) acres in size.  The new Ordinance became effective as of October 23, 2017 to allow properties with less than five (5) acres chickens under a permitting process.  All properties les than five (5) acres require a permit to have chickens.   A maximum total of 20 permits will be allowed for properties under 2.5 acres in size at any time.

Properties under 2.5 acres are allowed up to 5 chickens

Properties 2.5 to 5 acres in size are allowed up to 10 chickens

Properties over 5 acres shall continue to meet standards as set forth in Animal Codes

Persons thinking of having chickens are encouraged to read the informational brochure and the City Code to understand City requirements.  Contact City Hall with additional questions. 

Complaints regarding neighboring chickens shall be directed to City Hall to initiate potential administrative enforcement.
